      Health Protocols

      Good health enhances your student's ability to learn. School nurses support good health and learning by performing a variety of duties: including direct student care; assessing student health needs; providing inservice training for staff and students; conducting mandatory health screenings; overseeing maintenance of student health and immunization records; administering medication and providing emergency first aid to students and staff.

      Keep your student's health and emergency information updated with current names and telephone numbers. If you will be away and someone else is responsible for your child please contact your school nurse so she can update your emergency blue card.

      If the health status of your child changes notify your school nurse with updated information ie: surgeries, medications, illness/diseases, diagnoses or any other condition that could affect your child's performance.

      New registering students must have required immunizations prior to entering school.
      All new students will also need to have a physical.

      Medications should be scheduled so they may be given at home, but is understood that this is not always possible. When it is necessary for your child to receive medications during school hours the following procedure is required
      Click here to access the Medication Procedure and Medication Authorization Form.

      State mandated health appraisals (physicals) must be completed after June 15th of the next school year for new students, kindergarten, grades K, 1 ,3, 5, 7, 9 & 11 grades Physical Form.
      The school physician will give these exams if the health office does not receive the report.

      Sports physicals must be completed after June 1st for the next school year.
      Click here to access the Sports Physical Form.

      New York state law requires school districts to perform health screening for height, weight, vision, hearing and scoliosis. Students may be referred to their school nurse for individual screenings by a parent or teacher.
      * Vision screening is given to new students, kindergarten, grades K, 1, 3, 5, 7 &11
      * Hearing screening is given to new students, kindergarten, grades K, 1, 3, 5, 7 & 11
      * Scoliosis screening is given to grades 5 & 7 for girls grade 9 for boys

      By law, schools may administer first aid only to students in the event of an accident at school. The nurse may not treat injuries that have occurred away from school. The possibility of complications occurring is greater if proper treatment is delayed.

      Students are excused from physical education class for one day with a parent request. Longer exclusions require a note from the student's physician, nurse practitioner or physician assistant. Any child who does not participate in gym class will not be permitted to participate in recess.

      Please send your child to school wearing comfortable clothing. Children should be dressed for the weather. Outer wear, such as coats and jackets should be labeled. All children are expected to participate in outdoor recess unless the Health Office is notified of a medical condition to the contrary. Please make sure your child is wearing appropriate clothing for recess.

      Please notify the Health Office of any contagious conditions that your child may have contracted. This includes head lice, impetigo, scabies, ringworm or conjunctivitis (pink eye). Early notification helps to prevent the spread of these types of conditions.

      CHICKENPOX - A student who is recovering from Chicken Pox may return to school when all the lesions have scabs, usually 7-10 days after onset. Please bring your child to the nurse the first day back so that she can check him/her before returning to class.

      CONJUNCTIVITIS - A student who has been sent home from school due to suspected conjunctivitis may return to school only after treatment for 24 hours if it is bacterial conjunctivitis. Otherwise they may return to school with a doctor’s note which indicated that the conjunctivitis is not bacterial in nature.

      FEVER - Any student with a temperature of 100 degrees or over will be sent home from school. That child should not return to school until his/her temperature has been below 100 degrees for 24 hours.

      HEAD LICE - Any student found to have lice shall be excluded from school. They may return to school once treatment, as recommended by their health care provider, has been done and all nits have been removed. Please bring you child to the nurse the first day back so that she can check to make sure all the nits have been removed.

      RINGWORM - Any student suspected of having ringworm will be sent home. They may return to school only after treatment for 24 hours. If ringworm was not confirmed by your physician then the student may return with a doctor’s note which indicated that the student does not have ringworm.

      SHINGLES - Follow the same protocol as for Chicken Pox.

      STREP THROAT - Any student diagnosed with strep throat must begin treatment with an antibiotic and may return to school on the second day after medication has started.

      GYM NOTES - Notes from Doctors of Chiropractic which request modification of school programs, i.e. gym, early dismissal, use of elevator may be accepted for a period of one week only. Requests for modifications for a period longer than one week must come from a Medical Doctor, Osteopath, Nurse Practitioner, or Physician’s Assistant.
